Art lovers, get ready! The Woven Sanctuaries, a group exhibition bringing together the work of seven women artists from Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia,  is set to hold in Los Angeles.

Envisioning worlds of living counter-monuments infused with visceral memories and lineal histories, the participating artists, Rawan Abbas, Yoma Emore, Elfreda Fakoya, Gladys Kalichini, Sedireng Mothibatsela, Fiker Solomon, and Agnes Waruguru, utilised vicarious and cast-off textiles and natural fibres. These artists cultivate dialogues that coexist and collaborate with the past and present.

Apparent in each of the works is an intergenerational exchange that speaks to the liminal spaces between grief, loss, joy, wonder, growth, and coming of age.

This upcoming exhibition at Rele will feature artists who explore the concept of returning. Some artists will revisit physical locations or actions, while others will create imagined spaces that offer a sense of familiarity and comfort. However, each artist’s work engages in the radical act of remembering.
