When it comes to sweltering heat waves one would think that only the Sahara desert can be compared to the heart of the sun; unfortunately Nigeria is firmly and currently on that map. Waves and waves of sweat that viciously pour (not trickle)down one’s neck soaking hair, skin, soul and sanity to the point of no return (lets just say writing this article in this weather should be regarded as an Olympic sport). One is even tempted to ask if someone or a demon sent on an errand for hell, forgot to lock the gates behind them (at this point that is the only logical conclusion…spare me the details about global warming/ warning, this is now beyond earthly rationale). Children, and adults and animals alike are left consistently drenched in scores of uncomfortable sweat while slowly repenting from their sins, because if it is hot as it is now on earth (Nigeria is our focus) one can horrifyingly imagine what hell would feel like! As the hot and painfully humid temperatures soar in Nigeria, so does the creativity (and sometimes…well all the time confusion) in fashion choices ( because copying without concrete understanding is a fashion statement…).
While there is an understanding that staying stylish while enduring in the scorching heat is important, there are not only definitely dos and don’ts to keep in mind to avoid sweating bullets while being fashion-forward, but sometimes honestly are just plain old common sense (unfortunately for some common sense is not common). Today’s article will be more straight to the point unlike most ring around the Rosey articles written in the past, reason is simple…IT’S SIMPLY TOO HOT to linger for long time (the fear of drenching my laptop with sweat is a new fear that has been recently unlocked thanks to the heat…) So as always, for those who are new here, Welcome to the space where alternative options for understanding are important! To the old, you already know, hold your breath, clear your mind and let’s jump shall we into the world of FASHION OVERKILL: HEATWAVE CONFUSION.
As someone who can be termed a people watcher (thanks to my job) it turns my brain into mush when I see people in Nigeria (specifically in Abuja, where i have more people watching experience) wear suits, blazers, fancy winter jackets (the kind you see in movies or K-dramas), turtle necks and any heat inducing outfit out in public, while looking like the dived into a stream of steaming water. The question is what kind of death are you looking at? Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, infections? People need to realise very quickly that the heat can trigger sudden unfortunate events like heart attack, or worsen other existing medical conditions like kidney or lung disease. According to Better Health ‘Heat can cause serious and potentially fatal health problems’.
“To survive a heat wave, hydrate, shade, and ventilate.”
Fashion overkill is often one of the biggest problems in Nigeria. Most people unfortunately do not know how to either dress for the occasion or the weather. Just because those Ugg boots look cool online or in a film, does not mean they look cool in scorching heat season in Nigeria (some things must be left for the movies). Dressing for the weather is one thing Nigerians need to adapt to (it is a daily prayer). I have seen people wear heels to a beach party, or club type dresses to weddings and Lord knows what else at the wrong place and time yet boldly say ‘You would not understand because you are not fashion conscious’. For those who have read the articles in the past, I may have done a little bragging about what I classify myself as in regards to beauty and the absolute confidence that comes with embodying such a mindset. Yes this writer may not wear makeup or soul snatching and crushing waist lie outfits (because blessed is he or she that has what others pay for) yet I do have common sense. Fashion may not be my extract strong suit but neither is culpable homicide or suicide (why do you want to kill yourself because of poor understanding of time, place and weather). Here are six reasons why some people might be overdoing it in the heatwave, leaving others sweating and crying (literally!).
1. If the vixens can, so can I.
Rocking that faux leather jacket like you are in a music video ( I mean if you like bursts of heat rashes in very uncomfortable places be my guest). Noone should needlessly suffer for fashion – leave the sticky and noisy faux leather for cooler days and embrace light, breathable fabrics that allow your skin to breathe.
2. I must be seen from space.
So by blinding people with your neon bodysuit while you are being publicly turned into shrivelled old sausage works? While bold colours and prints can be statement pieces, remember that less is more. No one wants to feel like they need sunglasses just to talk to you, especially when they are already trying to protect themselves from being blinded by the actual sun..
3. It looked good in the movies.
Wearing winter boots because they happened to look good in the movies with your outfit is an absolute NO. Question is did you notice the weather they wore them in? Trust me, sweating profusely inside those winter boots is not a good look, nor would the smell when taken off.
5. If it does not hug my soul it is not sexy.
First of all, slow down little dough, you are not an ingredient to be piped on cake (welllllllll to each his/her own) By squeezing into that skin-tight bodycon dress by fire and force, you do not give your skin space to breathe at all. Embrace loose, flowy silhouettes that allow for air circulation. Trust us, you’ll thank us when you’re not struggling to breathe.
6. What’s a little or a lot of skin? It is my body!
Everyone deserves to show a little to boost their confidence but it’s already too hot to be extra heat traumatised simply because you choose to over flash everyone because your mini Skirt is riding up. It is already hot, we just do not need to be hotter and bothered.
“In a heat wave, even the air conditioners need air conditioners.”
Here are a few alternative that can be done:
“Heat waves are like nature’s sauna, but without the relaxation.”
While it is important to talk about the ills of poorly timed fashion choices as well as alternatives to them during this heatwave, one must also discuss the real health terrors that can occur (they were earlier mentioned in passing… lets really get into it now). We must not prioritise fashion over practicality especially during this demon confusing heatwave in Nigeria, along with essential alternative strategies to stay safe, healthy, and still stylish:
1. Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke; Wearing inappropriate clothing in extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms include dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. Opt for breathable fabrics and loose silhouettes to prevent these serious conditions.
2. Dehydration; Overdressing and not staying properly hydrated can lead to dehydration, a common issue during heatwaves. Carry a stylish water bottle, drink plenty of water, and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption.
3.Sunburn and Skin Cancer; Neglecting sun protection for the sake of fashion can result in sunburn and increase the risk of skin cancer. Wear sunscreen, a chic hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.
4. Respiratory Issues; Breathing difficulties can arise when wearing heavy, non-breathable fabrics in high temperatures. Opt for lightweight materials to prevent respiratory distress, especially for individuals with existing conditions like asthma.
5. Heat-Related Fatigue; Overdoing it in the heat can lead to exhaustion and fatigue, making it difficult to enjoy social gatherings or even work. Embrace minimalism and prioritize comfort to avoid feeling drained and fatigued.
6. Increased Risk of Infections; Sweating excessively due to overdressing can create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of skin infections. Choose breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics to prevent skin irritation and infections.
7. Impact on Mental Health; Feeling uncomfortable and overheated due to impractical fashion choices can negatively impact mental well-being. Prioritize comfort and practicality to ensure you can truly enjoy yourself at social gatherings without unnecessary stress.
In light of these unfortunately overlooked health risks, here are some alternative strategies for you to stay safe and healthy during the ongoing heatwave in Nigeria while you still get to make desired fashion statements:
1. Choose Breathable Fabrics
2.Prioritize Hydration
3.Sun Protection
4. Light Layering
5. Footwear Choices
Conclusion
“A heat wave is like walking into an oven, with no way out.”
By embracing these alternative strategies and focusing on practicality and comfort, individuals in Nigeria can happily navigate the looming heatwave safely and healthily while still making fashion statements that are both stylish and conducive to their well-being. Remember, staying safe and healthy should always be a top priority, even in the midst of fashion choices. So while we ponder on how to effectively and consistently stay dry with losing our minds, stripping publicly or biting someone (discomfort can reset your polite senses), remember that not everything has to be a statement, we must opt for common sense and understanding in order to live longer and avoid jail sentences. Till next time…Bye!
